Quantum Horizons and Space-Time Non-Commutativity

We study dynamics of a scalar field in the near-horizon region described by a static Klein-Gordon operator which is the Hamiltonian of the system. The explicite construction of a time operator near-horizon is given and its self-adjointness discussed. ⋆ Expanded version of a poster presented at the 5 European Advanced Study Conference in Ancient Olympia, Greece, May 2004. Preprint submitted to E...

Local existence of dynamical and trapping horizons.

Given a spacelike foliation of a spacetime and a marginally outer trapped surface S on some initial leaf, we prove that under a suitable stability condition S is contained in "horizon" i.e., a smooth 3-surface foliated by marginally outer trapped slices which lie in the leaves of the given foliation. We also show that under rather weak energy conditions this horizon must be either achronal or s...

Space-Times Admitting Isolated Horizons

We characterize a general solution to the vacuum Einstein equations which admits isolated horizons. We show it is a non-linear superposition – in precise sense – of the Schwarzschild metric with a certain free data set propagating tangentially to the horizon. This proves Ashtekar’s conjecture about the structure of spacetime near the isolated horizon. The same superposition method applied to th...

Cauchy horizons in Gowdy space times

We analyse exhaustively the structure of non-degenerate Cauchy horizons in Gowdy space-times, and we establish existence of a large class of non-polarized Gowdy space-times with such horizons. Added in proof: Our results here, together with deep new results of H. Ringström (talk at the Miami Waves conference, January 2004), establish strong cosmic censorship in (toroidal) Gowdy space-times.

Extended Time Horizons

Input–output analysts are often confronted with requests for impacts assessments for economic shocks that stretch uncomfortably the assumptions of standard input–output modeling. This paper presents an approach to confronting a subset of these challenges straightforwardly in a way that ameliorates some of the more restrictive input– output assumptions, maintains the inter–industry detail of the...
